Patternmaking

Patterns were developed from the disassembled paper prototype. They were then tested in muslin and refined. Further introduction of features led to more modifications until the final pattern was reached.

Muslin Prototype

  • Wire around top and bottom edge for support

  • Needs more structure along back

  • Cardboard backing added

  • Bristol board used for lid, middle, and base support

  • Zipper added in middle

  • Lining is added, seams are still exposed

  • Wire held in by top-stitching, hard to keep its shape

  • Lid seam allowance still on the outside of bag

Felt Prototype

  • Straps are curved and extra material is added to support chest strap

  • A handle is added to aid in moving around the pack

  • Hip strap helps distribute the load

  • Plastic sheets replace bristol to increase structure

  • Side pockets are added for extra storage of small items or for easy access to water

  • Lid has zipper added for more more reliable closure

  • All straps are made adjustable

  • Zigzag stich over nylon handle and strap for reinforcement

  • Foam was added to the back, straps, and hip straps for comfort

  • Bias tape along edge of strap hides seams

  • Top-stiching along zippers holds fabric in place and prevents it from getting caught
